Ag Student Work and Training opportunity for Wairarapa Farms in 2020

Ag Student Work and Training opportunity for Wairarapa Farms in 2020

GFF (Growing Future Farmers) with support from local farmers and Beef + Lamb NZ would like to invite you to register interest in training an Ag Student in 2020.  GFF offer a revamped farm training scheme intended to run in our strongest local businesses.

Aim: efficiently grow high quality, work-ready, staff for our industry in the 21st Century with a win-win deal for farms and students.   The programme is designed and monitored by industry specialists, delivered locally, with credible on farm work time to grow real skills and experience.

GFF is a National Training Trust based in Gisborne.  The board includes Stuart Ellingham (chair), Jo Johnstone, Annabel Subtil, Tam Jex Blake (interim GM) and Campbell Furlong (PWC providing strategic advice).  GFF also have an advisory panel of employers and industry organisations from regions throughout NZ.

GFF in the Wairarapa offers a win-win opportunity for our farmers and students:

  • A 2-year programme based primarily on farm - coordinating real work (including building a team of dogs), specialized industry training and formal NZQA learning.
  • Students live and work on farm (plus flexibility to utilize shared accommodation in the district)
  • A high energy, motivated member of your team for at least 4 days /week, fully engaged in your business – working and learning as an integral part of your farm program and supported off farm by a robust training programme.
  • Students enjoy high quality, commercial training and experience and earn $150/week “scholarship” from their training farm.  Students earn as they learn.
  • Up to 1 day /week in specialist training off-farm for targeted qualifications enabling students to graduate with GFF Essential Farm Skills and NZ Certificate of Agriculture (NZQA Level 3).
  • Cloud based recording and moderating of student learning via Farm IQ and HR consultant
  • Cost per farm of student training package = approx. $28,000/pa (includes rent and scholarship – see attached spreadsheet of costs)
  • A credible career pathway - transitioning students into permanent employment
  • High quality students selected by a panel of farmers objectively matching student attitude, suitability and commitment for direct on farm learning.
  • Opportunities to make real progress in upskilling and accrediting your team in staff and people management.
  • Enabling our industry to take the lead role in attracting and training future farmers and enjoy their energy and enthusiasm in the engine room of our businesses
  • Modern, grass roots, industry aligned farm training

We urgently need to hear from high quality commercial farms with the skills and capacity to train an excellent young farmer - commencing 15 January 2020.
